Gremlins (1984)

MPAA Rating: PG
Release Date: June 8, 1984 (USA)
Budget: $11m (estimated)
Running Time: 106 Minutes (Theatrical Version)

Summary:
A young man (Billy Peltzer, played by Zach Galligan) is given a mysterious creature called a Mogwai as a Christmas gift from his father, along with three equally mysterious rules passed down from a young chinese boy;

1. Keep him out of the light, he hates bright light, especially sunlight, it’ll kill him.
2. Keep him away from water, don’t get him wet.
3. The most important rule, the rule you can never forget. Never. Never. Feed him after midnight.

The three rules are inadvertantly broken, and the city quickly becomes host to a gaggle of unruly creatures dubbed “Gremlins.” The sleepy  town of Kingston Falls, USA is turned upside down by the tiny green creatures on christmas eve, and only Gizmo & Billy, along with Billy’s dream girl, Kate,  (played by Phoebe Cates) can save the town from the menace and chaos of the Gremlins!

Trivia:
Gremlins was one of two movies that prompted the MPAA to re-evaluate their rating system, and along with “Indiana Jones & The Temple Of Doom” inspired the PG-13 rating due to some scenes that are particularly graphic in both films.

In an original draft of the film, there was no “Gizmo” and all the mogwai turned into Gremlins, leaving it up to Billy to save the day with a small band of friends.

Amblin Entertainment shoud join WB on Gremlins 3 because they did produced the first two and warner studios did distributed it so it shoud be the same for part III, the last film in the gremlins trilogy.

Thanks JP, I don’t even know if I’d be allowed to watch it until I’m older, I’ll probably watch it when I turn 13 next year. (Sadly I’m only 12.) Until then I’ll read more stuff about it.
I’ve seen some pictures and clips from the Munchies sequels. It’s pretty crazy stuff. And I’m not even sure if that thing IS a munchie!
I have read some good stuff about the movie Critters also. I think they made 4 movies, they all had good reviews. If Critters sequels where good I’m sure any Gremlins sequels would be just as great, or even better than the first 2 movies!

Munchies was a gremlins Knock-off Produced by B-Movie legend Roger Corman, starring Harvey Korman as our hero and his arch nemesis Harvey Korman!

The plot was very similar, mysterious creature comes home to a small town, then multiplies (this time whenever it is cut apart) and the munchies cause chaos all over the city.

There are even some Gremlins references in the film, such as an old lady driving a Gremlin, and a mogwai-looking creature on the back of a tabloid with the word “GREMLIN?” above it.

It is one of the better Gremlins Knock-offs and you might be able to find a copy at used bookstores.

There are also two “Sequels” (I use quotes because they have pretty much nothing to do with the first film beyond the name and having a little gremlin-type creature) called MUNCHIE and Munchie strikes back.
Both were more family fare than the original Munchies, but neither comes close to the wackiness that the original Munchies had.

I own a copy of this film on VHS but it is in very poor condition. Keep your eyes open at rummage sales, flea markets and people just getting rid of old movies. You might stumble upon it!

note: there is a copy on eBay right now that is going pretty cheap, keep an eye on it.

I saw some stuff about a movie called “Munchies”. It looks quite a bit like Gremlins. The plot is somewhat similar and the creatures look VERY similar to Gremlins. VERY VERY SIMILAR! Just a couple things though like a little extra fur. The movie was never very popular and i’ve read a couple re-views one said “it was poorly done” and another said “it was a waste of time” . I only want to see it to compare it to Gremlins but I can’t find it at any local video store and it sells for an average of $180 online. I don’t think it’s well worth all that. If anyone has seen it can they tell me about it?

Great stuff both movies are! loved them since i was a kid. They did spawned some imitators like “Critters 1 & 2” (which are both good fun in their own right), “Ghoulies” and the worst one of them all that MST3K fans are familar with known as “Hobgoblins”.
