Gremlin Invasion

What is Gremlin Invasion?
That is a question that has been asked by gremlins fans worldwide.
Gremlins Invasion is a ride at Warner Brothers Movie World Germany, and finding information on it has been something of a challenge.
Thankfully there have recently been some discoveries on various details, and here we will do our best to share that with you.

This section of Gremlins Online is still under extensive construction, so check back often to see what develops!

Ride Summary

ridegizmo.jpggremlinsadventurecar.jpg

The ride begins with you and your fellow visitors filing into a special car to watch some outakes from various Warner Bros films, hosted by none other than ALF himself.

gremlins2.jpg

Your theatrical experience is cut short, however, as the gremlins are on the loose! ALF tells you that you can escape through the WB film archives and Gizmo is here to help you get out of this nightmare.

gremlins4.jpg
As you ride through the archives, the gremlins are all over the place some spoofing scenes from Warner Bros. movies, others just causing general gremliny chaos.
gremlins3.jpg
Things keep getting worse, the gremlins start destroying the original prints of Warner Bros. most famous films, and the legendary sets from our favorite movies!
gremlins_mw.jpg
Things look bleak, but just when you think you are forever trapped by the little green beasties, Gizmo and ALF find a “Shocking” way to eliminate the Gremlins and save the day!

Here it is folks, the big one, the full ride including the bloopers reel that gets “interrupted” by gremlins. The ride takes a lot of liberties with the gremlins lore, but it is awesome to see in it’s full glory! Thanks to Roy for sending this in!

Thanks to Je-B who translated ALF from the beginning of the video: “I’ll now take you to a safe place through the film archive. Please don’t touch the film reels. These are the only surviving copies of 6000 Warner Bros. films.”

Another video clip of the ride. Thanks to Tomas for the submission!

Behind The Scenes Info

The ride was originally located in two WB Movie World theme parks, Germany and Australia, opening in 1996 and 1991, respectively. The Australian ride was removed to make way for a Scooby-Doo ride based off of the film in mid 2001.

Official Info from Warner Bros Movie World:
(Dates from Roller-coaster.com.au)

The Great Gremlins Adventure
AKA Gremlin Invasion

Warner Bros Movie World Australia
Opened: June 3 1991
Closed: 2001 due to pending retrofit for Scooby-Doo ride.

The Great Gremlins Adventure starts harmlessly. Seated in a comfortable screening room, you’ll see some of Hollywood’s funniest out-takes – the bits that didn’t make it onto the silver screen. But suddenly something goes wrong and everyone must evacuate! Gremlins have taken over! Prepare for an escape through the backroom film vaults. But watch out! There are 56 Gremlins on the loose!

I’ve been in the ride years ago when I was much younger and I was so impressed by this ride! (and the ‘neverending story one’, also with great “screen-used-looking” animatronics)
Years later I’d been looking to find these rides again to find that they weren’t there anymore! I was so dissapointed…

but I found this website in dutch that says that the ride and the animatronics are still there, and they’ve been opening the ride each year on halloween…
I don’t know if its true for I haven’t seen it but I hope it is, ’cause maby they will get some sense knockt into them and the’ll make a new Gremlin-ride!

to everyone that can read dutch:

    Love you’re site!
There isn’t hardly enough to be found on Gremlins on the internet…

Tom: Thank you for your kind words, I hope to have a ton more on this site for you to peruse in the near future!
    As for your questions:
    1. Gremlins are about 2.5 feet tall to 3 feet tall. They do tend to walk somewhat crouched, so I am sure a fully extended gremlin is slightly taller than the average 3 feet, in the book it mentions that the gremlins arm was disproportionately longer than it should have been at 2 feet long. Since we know that human’s armspan typically is their height, we can assume that gremlins are shorter than 4 feet due to their elongated arms.
Stripe did not seem to be much bigger than the average gremlin, though his white mane sure makes it look like he is taller by comparison. Another thing to mention is the filmmakers typically used a “Hero” puppet for scenes with stripe, which was larger to accommodate more mechanical tricks and more puppeteers hands, as well as being more detailed for closeups. So if a “Hero” puppet was used, and a normal gremlin was nearby in the shot, stripe would definitely appear larger.

    2. Gremlins had a considerably long filming cycle, and If I am not mistaken, it was being worked on in mid/late 1983, with final shoots and such being finished up in early 1984. There are versions of the script that date back to 1982, and the film had a lot of changes made before the human scenes began filming. They even had tried testing some footage with monkeys in Gremlins Costumes, but apparently that failed, as the monkeys just destroyed the costumes and made a mess…..Granted…..That is what gremlins do anyways…

Matt: Your best bet will be eBay or local auctions to find a WB gremlins display model/full size puppet. When most WB Stores closed, they ensured that the gremlins models that were on display in the stores were destroyed to avoid them showing up in bars or other places that they felt were not appropriate. Basically it is the same reason Chuck E. Cheese tries to ensure that all “walkaround” costumes are destroyed after being retired, so that some random pizza shop or local business cannot use them to promote their businesses.

That said, they are out there, but expect to pay a hefty price for anything official, as most were destroyed, and the ones that weren’t are going to be hard to keep in good condition. Most of the models in the stores were made of a fiberglass or a fragile resin, with an acryllic paintjob. The puppets used in the film are hard as ever to find, and the few I have seen go for well into the thousands of dollars (USD). Again, it is uncommon that you will find any of the puppets from the film as the laytex that was used was never designed to last forever or be a collectable. The more human contact, air exposure, and phyiscal abuse the piece goes through, hurts its lifespan. This is why most screen-used puppets are missing chunks or flaking paint.

Your best bet is to buy one of the newer toys or puppets that are available in the mass market or online, they may not be life-sized, but they are fantastic quality, and will last you a good long while! Try to avoid anything that is unlicensed, as if anyone is getting our Gremlins money, it should be the companies that will take note and see that we will purchase more gremlins stuff, so they make more, and possibly more gremlins films!

    Hi, there!
My name’s Tom Roykouff and I love this website! I didn’t realise there was a Gremlins ride. Gremlins is one of my all time favorite movies and I’ve got a couple of questions to ask. If you don’t mind, ehre they are.
    1.)How tall are Gremlins?
    Especially Stripe?

2.)Does anybody know when Gremlins was filmed or how
long it took them to the make the movie.?

Other then that keep up the great work on
    such a fantastic website!
    From,
    Tom Roykouff

beetlejuice was the host of the ride in Australia and seems to be the one who took the place of alf, I remember this 100% as beetlejuice was one of my favourtie movies.

I rode this in ’91 just before it was shut down, and is one of my fondest memories, we went on a family trip to the gold coast and this was the first theme park ride i ever went on. I was really upset to find it had been replaced in Australia with the Scooby Doo ride, as it has been in germany. Although the scooby doo ride is really cool it has nothing on the gremlins one.

I believe the gremlins rides were made with animatronics form the actual movie, whether this is accurate or not, however I cant say.
