Warner Bros Moving forward with Gremlins Reboot?

According to various movie news sites and broken by Bloody-Disgusting, Warner Bros. are moving forward with a Gremlins reboot. There is no hard evidence or public press release yet, but I will keep you updated with more info as it becomes available! gremlin3q.gif

Current word going around is Seth Grahame-Smith (Writer of the recent Dark Shadows reboot) is going to produce the film along with David Katzenberg.

{Gremlins 3 Rumor Mill} Joe Dante Comments On Gremlins 3

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Joe Dante (Director of Gremlins & Gremlins 2) was asked the usualquestion regarding Gremlins 3 and its production status.
When the interviewer mentioned everything was getting sequels and remakes except for gremlins, the next question naturally was about the further adventures of Billy, Gizmo, Kate, and a horde of  little green monsters….

“Is there any news on Gremlins 3?”

No. Every so often I call Warner Bros. and say, “You guys doing anything with this?” And they always say, “No.” There was a period a couple of years ago when I think they were working on something but that fell through. I don’t know. They didn’t really understand the first movie, so I think they’re having

trouble figuring out what to do, especially with the change in special effects. The first movies were defined by the technique that we used, which is now out of date. Now, with CGI anything can happen, so it’s difficult to focus the story onto something that’s going to have a point. So rather than being No. 3, I would think they would just go back to the beginning and remake it.

However, the interviewer did ask if he would be interested in doing Gremlins 3, and while the tone seemed to be in jest, it somewhat comes into contradiction with some other things he has said regarding the Gremlins franchise.

Would that be something you would be interested in doing? I work for Time Warner. Maybe I could put in a good word for you!

Well, that’s fine. It would be very flattering if they came to me and said, “Would you like to be involved?” But I have a feeling that they’ve moved on.

So there is where things are, the father of Gremlins himself is pretty sure the franchise is done for the moment. Keep in mind folks, this is Hollywood. Stranger things have happened. They are remaking Fright Night, so that shows you that anything can get a sequel or remake…even Gremlins.

The only real new news here is that Joe Dante has previously said he didn’t really have an interest in doing a Gremlins 3, but that may have been coming from a “They will never ask me, so I don’t really care” kind of attitude.

Nothing to see here, move along.

Hey Folks!

All has been way too quiet on the Gremlins front for a long while now, and I think we can all agree we would just like to have some kind of news regarding the development (or not) of Gremlins 3 from someone in the know.  Everyone I have spoken to that would know anything about the film has said the same thing: “There is progress, but it is all talk right now”

That doesn’t mean there won’t ever be a Gremlins 3, and it doesn’t mean it will definitely happen either. It just is a sample of what hollywood is known for. Talking. Everyone “absolutely wants to” do another movie (with the exception of Joe Dante, but even he is sure there will be a G3 eventually) but no one “absolutely wants to” put the money forward to really make this happen.

Bringing a property back that has seen no activity on TV or film in over 20 years is a hard sale unless it is a reboot, but then the questions are asked: Does Gremlins NEED a reboot? and Would it work in 2011?

The fact of Ghostbusters 3 still hasn’t happened really hurts the chances of Gremlins 3 happening anytime reasonably soon. If you are wondering how the two are related, as they are both from completely separate companies, Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters 2 were massive commercial successes spawning merchandise beyond what Gremlins could and has done. There have been 2 (3 if you include Slimer! And the Real Ghostbusters) cartoon series, and there is a lot of activity on the fan front. (see http://protoncharging.com if you want the best Ghostbusters site out there!) Gremlins has you, the fantastic and loyal gremlins fans, but sadly it pales in comparison to the size of the Ghostbusters fan segment. More fans = more money.

Now if there were a way we could show the studios that Gremlins is a financial blockbuster and they are insane not to make the movie RIGHT NOW, we would be in great shape. So keep the fan art, fan videos and discussion flowing. We know they are watching this site, and if we keep up the momentum and show them that there is a lot of money to be made from bringing back our favorite property, it just might help convince the ones that are on the fence to finally give the green light to our green friends!

{Gremlins 3} IGN Reports: No Gremlins 3 For Joe Dante

Not really new news at all but interesting nonetheless.

http://movies.ign.com/articles/111/1119169p1.html

“There are no plans in the offing to do another Gremlins movie” he revealed. “I think that because of the CGI situation and the fact that you can now do anything when you make a movie… the originalfilms were limited by the scope of what we could do technically, and that’s what the movies became about. Now it’s so wide-open, you can almost do anything, and I don’t think they’ve got a handle on what kind of movie it would be.

There you have it folks, right now he does not know of any plans for Gremlins 3. This doesn’t mean it isn’t happening, it just means it is not happening right now….stay tuned for more details…

Third 3G Poster unveiled! Nostalgia abounds!

Hey folks I just got an email from the folks at the 3G Art Show and they have released the third poster  for the event running September 3-22 in Los Angeles, CA.

For those who missed the last post on the show, the Autumn Society & Gallery is putting on an art gallery featuring art that was inspired by three iconic 80’s movies. Specifically, Ghostbusters, Gremlins and Goonies.

All three of these films captured the imagination of  audiences, young and old alike and still have a strong presence in Pop Culture to this day. Of course the thing that caught my eye was the Gremlins portion, however I have a soft spot in my hollowed-out shell of a heart that is reserved for Ghostbusters and Goonies. Growing up in the 80’s as Hulk Hogan reminded me to Say My Prayers and Eat My Vitamins, Gremlins and Ghostbusters for the most part were the two films that enamored me more than anything. They were movies that took the subject matter seriously, and played it straight while having humor intertwined with frightening or creepy scenes.  Goonies was never as huge of an influence on me personally, but it did have a special slot on my VHS shelf dedicated to that childhood dream of perilous adventure.

(more blogging and pictures and art and stuff past the break! Read more! Be enthralled!)
