Originally CinemaSins made a video about Gremlins about 12 years ago, but they have made a new version that is 20 minutes longer than the original, and a much higher modern production value, check a look then come back here for some ranting!
CinemaSins is a an oft-divisive comedy YouTube channel that personally I have been a fan of for a many years. It takes riffing and nitpicking that MST3K perfected eons ago, and puts it in an addictive and easily-digestible format.
I understand some people take films seriously, but I love picking apart my favorite movies, especially Gremlins. This movie is one I have seen more times that I care to try and count, and can recite in my sleep but I still love to laugh at the errors, silliness, and ridiculous plot points that the film presents.
Personally I think the “sinning” the channel does is good-natured in general, especially as the writers and narrator have gotten better over time. Much like well-done parodies by artists like “Weird Al” Yankovic, the great luke Ski, and Insane Ian, this kind of comedy requires a true passion for the source material or it falls apart. Those comedy musicians all appreciate the artists and songs they parody, and are not malicious in their work. Learning the style of another artist or band and adapting it into something else while being respectful of the original is a talent few possess. Most people just punch down in parody, with the intent to hurt. That just isn’t me.
The same holds true for the crew at CinemaSins.
The work they do shows that they truly love film. I mentioned MST3K earlier, can you imagine watching those movies over and over again while trying to write riffs if you truly hated “bad” movies?
Frank Conniff, best known as TV’s Frank in MST3K wrote about this in Twenty Five Mystery Science Theater 3000 Films That Changed My Life in No Way Whatsoever. He was the one that would sit through the majority of the worst of the worst films to find the ones that fit the MST3K mould best.
Why do I say all this? It seems every time I bring up the subject of riffing movies or CinemaSins specifically, there is a contingent of people who get extremely offended and agitated that it exists and that the jokes are actual criticism and attacks on their favorite films. Plus I felt like ranting a bit about nitpicking for fun but still enjoying the end product.
Of course they call Stripe “Spike” at one point in this video and it made me want to throw things in an impotent and “person that takes this far too seriously” rage, all while telling everyone to lighten up.
Wow that was a lot for me to say “check out this funny video”.
In search of a flasher…..(Gremlin)
Hey folks
I was reading a Fangoria from 1984 last night and in an interview with Chris Walas there was mention of some scenes shot but unused regarding a running gag with the Flasher Gremlin. Apparently he would open his coat and have a bunch of watches on the inside as if he were trying to sell stolen merchandise (in oh-so-80’s fashion).
Have any photos ever popped up online of this scene or any of the other flasher gremlin gags?
This also got me to thinking about the entire Dorry’s Pub sequence. Everyone knows that there were over 120 different gags conceived by the cast and crew for this legendary shoot, but is there a compilation of the pub scene that could have been if the budget was there and time wasn’t a constraint?

As part of Warner Bros’ celebration in honor of 1984’s Gremlins 30th anniversary as well as Gremlins 2: The New Batch is now 
available for Digital Download on iTunes! The quality is about the same as the current blu-ray release, and is just exciting to be able to have on my mobile device in high quality. Note: all the pictures in this post are courtesy of Warner Brothers and are grabbed from the iTunes digital download of Gremlins. The price is reasonable, and Warner Bros is offering a significant discount when buying the digital 2-pack. Might be worth it if nothing else than to watch Gremlins on an airplane….the irony!
This is just the first release in what is shaping up to be a fantastic 2014 for Gremlins fans.
Earlier this year, series star Zach Galligan tweeted that he did an 80-minute interview for the 30th anniversary “Definitive” Blu-Ray, which should be hitting later this year, and from what I have heard will contain new never-before-seen footage. Might we see the infamous McDonald’s scene? Probably not, but we just might get something surprising. As the tagline goes: What you see, isn’t always what you get. 
Speaking personally, I am pleasantly surprised that WB is putting their weight behind Gremlins this year.
The 25th anniversary came and went with a release, but not much fanfare.
In the merchandise realm, fans know that the Gremlins license is strong, with Neca’s recent Spider Gremlin selling incredibly well, and their 1:1 puppet prop replicas really standing out as must-haves for Gremlins fans. The Gremlins Series 3 line seems to be on indefinite hiatus at this point due to poor sales of previous 
Gremlin-themed figures vs their Mogwai figures, but that is another topic for another time.
Granted I would love to see and hold some props/replicas of original Gremlins gear, based on the 1984 sculpts since they seemed so much more “real” and detailed than the sequel’s designs to me. In the end, I am just happy to see more merchandise happening. Just a fact of life. The more money a product brings in means the more awesomeness we can get as fans!
Now let’s cross our fingers for a sequel/remake/reboot and that the Gremlins hype train gets started again. I have reached out to Warner Bros to find out any more details that might be offered regarding other upcoming Gremlin-centric treats, and I will be sure to get you any information as soon as possible!

Gizmo: The Game revealed at E3!
