UPDATE 7/22: The documentary is now available through July 30th over at https://hollywoodtheatre.org/events/gremlins-a-puppet-story/
Today is a good day to be a Gremlins fan. A great day, in fact. Why? Because Chris Walas, father of the Gremlins has dug deep within his personal archives to bring us the behind-the-scenes documentary we’ve always wanted!
Although there is a featurette, (which dates to production and has been on most iterations of the DVD/Bluray), it doesn’t have much behind-the-scenes content. Additional features were released with the Diamond Luxe edition Bluray, with some new content, but that too was fairly limited. But now Gremlins: A Puppet Story gives us an entirely new look at what it took to make one of the most beloved movies of the 1980’s.
Focusing largely on pre-production, this documentary provides a spectacular in-depth look at the creative process that took the titular critters from words on a script page to a foam-latex reality. Whether you already know a lot about the production or not, this documentary is a wonderful viewing experience.
A lot of fans are familiar with the fact that making Gremlins was a stressful experience for the crew. In Gremlins: A Puppet Story, the viewer gets a first-hand look at the early puppets and their limitations. We get to see the various rigs which were each designed for a single, specific action. We get a sense of the toll of uncertainty on the crew. We get to see how much work was done before the movie was green-lit (and it’s a LOT!). Have you ever wanted to see the test footage which earned that green light?
Now’s your chance! Watching the evolution of the puppets is fascinating, and underscores the incredible advances made by certain puppets later in production, namely the “super arms” and the “super gremlin”.
A Puppet Story is an intimate affair. It explores the human aspect of Gremlins as much as it does the mechanical/technical. This is not a cold, impersonal exploration of a film. This is Chris Walas’s personal story of struggle and success. The story of a largely inexperienced crew that came together to create and puppet innovative monsters the likes of which had not been seen before. Walas welcomes the viewer into his home, to tell us his story… and what a story it is!
This documentary is currently streaming for a limited time. Tickets are just $10 and benefit Hollywood Theatre. It’s only available until July 23, 2020, so don’t miss your chance to witness the creation of these iconic 80’s monsters!

Filmbalaya Reviews Gremlins (1984)
While browsing various blogs, I came across this post from about a week ago, and it is always nice to see people reviewing one of our favorite movies!
Filmbalaya recently decided to review Gremlins (1984) since Christmas is less than 6 months away and there is always time to enjoy some Gremlins and the Christmas cheer they bring.
A very brief but entertaining read, also check out their other very enjoyable movie reviews for some more of your favorite most loved and maybe even hated films.
Snippet:
Here is a film to teach us a very important lesson in reading instructions. Before playing with your new Christmas toy, gadget, appliance, or in this case a Gizmo, one must not only pay close attention to the instructions, but follow them with meticulous care.
Gremlins for Christmas & 25th Anniversary Rumors!
Heyas all!
First off, for those of you who follow the time honored Gremlins Online tradition of watching Gremlins every year right around christmas time, but haven’t broken down and purchased your very own Gremlins Special Edition DVD, Gremlins is airing on AMC pretty regularly through the holidays. Surprisingly, it is the unedited version with the complete microwave, blender and fireplace sequences!
If you have cable, be sure to check it out at the following upcoming showtimes:
Sun Dec 28 @ 6:30AM | 5:30C
Mon Dec 29 @ 1AM | 12C
Mon Dec 29 @ 7:30AM | 6:30C
I have also gotten word that there is supposed to be a new dvd release of Gremlins with some all-new special features in 2009. This would coincide with the 25th anniversary of the original film, so hopefully Warner Bros will go all out for this one and give us a version that has the deleted scenes included in the flow of the film! More updates as I discover more!
Deleted Scenes Holiday Treat!
Merry Christmas everyone!
Gremlins Online has a brand new section added to the site!
https://gremlins.wordpress.com/the-films/deleted-scenes/ will take you there.
It is just the beginning of what should be a wonderfully detailed account of known filmed, but deleted, scenes in both Gremlins films.
I have all the information from Gremlins 1 ready to go, and the Deleted Scenes page will be updated to reflect this soon. Gremlins 2 will be coming in the new year once I have some free time to pore over the montage of outtakes and deleted scenes from the Gremlins 2 DVD.
Happy Holidays everyone, and remember to make watching Gremlins around Christmas time a yearly tradition in your home too!
A Tidbit Of Gremlins 3 Info?
http://latinoreview.com/news.php?id=868
The folks over at latinoreview.com interviewed Joe Dante last month for his Masters of Horror project, who said a very interesting something about Gremlins 3 and if it will ever happen….
(Excerpt)
LR: I’ve heard rumors of a “Gremlins 3”. Any truth?
JD: “Gremlins 3”! Well, I’m sure there will be one. I know I won’t have anything to do with it. They won’t ask me. But the goal with “Gremlins 2” was to make sure there wouldn’t be a “Gremlins 3”. If there is a “Gremlins 3” they’re welcome to it. I think what’s holding it up is that they can’t conceive of what to do because the first movies were defined by the technology, it was what the puppets could do and do well and not do and that’s what the movies became. Now you could do anything with CGI so the field is so open that nobody could focus on what exactly it should be. I can’t say I’m looking forward to seeing it.
So nothing really new that we didn’t know already, Joe probably won’t have anything to do with it, and he really dislikes the idea of CGI Gremlins running around.
Ah well, the interview is a very good read, and there is another mention or two of gremlins that you will have to check out for yourself…

Overall, it has been slow in gremlins related info, but the Gremlins 3 rumor mill seems to be starting up yet again as it does every so many years…who knows? maybe this time we will get some more Gremliny fun!
