Website Updates and housecleaning…virtually and literally.

Heyas all!

As many of you have noticed by now, some things have been shifting around in the last few weeks here at Gremlins Online, and I just wanted to give you a heads up and a chance to voice your ideas on how we can together make Gremlins Online evenmore awesome.

First off the biggest changes are in the comments. We have been getting assaulted with a ridiculous amount of spam lately, and a few have been slipping through the cracks. To solve this and make sure this site doesn’t turn into a cesspool of annoying spammers barely even speaking engrish, here is what is changing:

  • All commenters must be registered on wordpress.com to comment.
For some this is a minor inconvenience but in reality it is something that should have been done long ago. Registering also fixes another minor issue people have contacted me about; Nickname stealing. So once you are registered you can customize your profile and do a ton of stuff you couldn’t otherwise. Your posts will not be manually moderated either, so no delay inposting on those days that I am too lethargic to check the comments queue and figure out which are real and which are attempting to get me to purchase brazilian mogwai cream. (yes I actually was offered this in a spam email once upon a time)
  • Link restrictions in comments
I put some more aggressive restrictions into action on the links that are in comments. Hopefully this will cut down on the malicious links that have popped up here and there.
  • Less comments displayed per page on default.
This is really another simple change that shouldn’t really affect most of you. We are only going to show the first few most recent comments on each page. Mainly this is another way of decreasing load times on the site, but also will be nice for those who don’t really care about the discussions to have to scroll through a massive long page of commenting. The discussion will still be there, you will just need to page through it manually now.

I have a toaster. It has become my nemesis.

I have a toaster.

Actually it isn’t just A toaster, it is THE toaster that I dreamed of when I married my wife. It was exactly the one I wanted us to have. Let me clarify: I wanted this toaster, she didn’t care. My “techie toaster” as she called it was all that was at the forefront of my brain as I was married. (aside from spending the rest of my life with a beautiful and forgiving wife that will not murder me for blog posts….I hope) I am pretty sure I rushed the ceremonies to simply get to the gift opening portion of the day to bask in the unadulterated glory which was my toaster. (The photo is a stock picture of the toaster we own, I assure you the reality is far from that beautiful after 6 years of abuse and would not be disgraced with bagels.)

Skip forward 6 years now. I woke up this morning with a dire craving, nay a NEED for waffles. I went and pulled the delightful blueberry Eggo waffles from the freezer, and as I loaded the 4-slot toaster I came to two disturbing realizations.

  1. There are 10 waffles in the box.
  2. There are 4 slots in the toaster.

I lowered my four waffles into the chrome slots with a certain hesitation, as I now understood why I lay awake at night.

I will have two waffles left over when all is said and done. This is an issue that must be resolved lest the earth hurtle into the sun.

There was no way around it, I wanted to eat my waffles but the cruel Eggo corporation decided to play a cruel joke to eviscerate my dreams of consistent 4 waffle breakfasts.
First, I toyed with the idea of making only 2 waffles, but then I determined that would be a waste of my toaster’s toasting prowess. If you feel I am being unreasonable, then take two wheels off your car and see how things go on your morning commute.

You got Gremlins in my Halo!

Hey folks!

Did you know that in the video game Halo Wars, there is a vehicle named the Gremlin?

It may not have big ears or really look much like a Gremlin, so what makes it special? Well it is fantastic at taking out enemy technology and structures similar to our little green friends, hence the name.

Third 3G Poster unveiled! Nostalgia abounds!

Hey folks I just got an email from the folks at the 3G Art Show and they have released the third poster  for the event running September 3-22 in Los Angeles, CA.

For those who missed the last post on the show, the Autumn Society & Gallery is putting on an art gallery featuring art that was inspired by three iconic 80’s movies. Specifically, Ghostbusters, Gremlins and Goonies.

All three of these films captured the imagination of  audiences, young and old alike and still have a strong presence in Pop Culture to this day. Of course the thing that caught my eye was the Gremlins portion, however I have a soft spot in my hollowed-out shell of a heart that is reserved for Ghostbusters and Goonies. Growing up in the 80’s as Hulk Hogan reminded me to Say My Prayers and Eat My Vitamins, Gremlins and Ghostbusters for the most part were the two films that enamored me more than anything. They were movies that took the subject matter seriously, and played it straight while having humor intertwined with frightening or creepy scenes.  Goonies was never as huge of an influence on me personally, but it did have a special slot on my VHS shelf dedicated to that childhood dream of perilous adventure.

(more blogging and pictures and art and stuff past the break! Read more! Be enthralled!)
