Third 3G Poster unveiled! Nostalgia abounds!

Hey folks I just got an email from the folks at the 3G Art Show and they have released the third poster  for the event running September 3-22 in Los Angeles, CA.

For those who missed the last post on the show, the Autumn Society & Gallery is putting on an art gallery featuring art that was inspired by three iconic 80’s movies. Specifically, Ghostbusters, Gremlins and Goonies.

All three of these films captured the imagination of  audiences, young and old alike and still have a strong presence in Pop Culture to this day. Of course the thing that caught my eye was the Gremlins portion, however I have a soft spot in my hollowed-out shell of a heart that is reserved for Ghostbusters and Goonies. Growing up in the 80’s as Hulk Hogan reminded me to Say My Prayers and Eat My Vitamins, Gremlins and Ghostbusters for the most part were the two films that enamored me more than anything. They were movies that took the subject matter seriously, and played it straight while having humor intertwined with frightening or creepy scenes.  Goonies was never as huge of an influence on me personally, but it did have a special slot on my VHS shelf dedicated to that childhood dream of perilous adventure.

{Rumor Mill} More Gremlins video game footage uncovered?

One of our regular readers found this on youtube which seems to be an early stage model of a Mogwai from the Gremlins PS2/Gamecube game.

Now a few people have said this looks way too good for PS2 generation graphics, but keep in mind the CGI models are much higher resolution in development than the final product. The game was never in development as far as we at Gremlins Online are aware, for any “next gen” console (360, PS3, Wii, even DS) as the dates of development are well before this console generation’s era.

Thanks for the tips folks!

Note: I have again attempted to contact the rights holders to the Gremlins video game clip I have, and asked permission to post it here so you all may see what the game may have been like.
I will keep you all updated with any info I get!

Gremlins 3 Remake? Reboot? Sequel?

There has been a lot of rumors and discussion regarding Gremlins 3 actually being a remake or reboot instead of a sequel, and looking at the current Hollywood climate, it sure seems likely, but why?

Logically a remake would attract more theatregoers than Gremlins 3 would.
Fans of the gremlins franchise will see anything Gremlins in the theatre, be it Gremlins 3 or a remake/reboot. So those are guaranteed customers and do not factor in to the math.

However, as it has been nearly 20 years since we have last seen Gremlins in any form (commercials, games,  and DVD releases not withstanding) there is an entire generation of potential ticket sales that have never even seen Gremlins in the media.  Those customers are unlikely to see a sequel to a movie they never have seen before. Sure some might rent the previous films but they frankly do not have the legacy that other long-dormant movie franchises (like Ghostbusters) do.

Let’s try it this way:

Say there are a million people who are guaranteed ticket sales. They love the previous movies, and would absolutely see a new one in the theatre, regardless of it being a reboot or sequel.

Remake: 1 Million
Sequel: 1 Million

Now let’s take the rest of the moviegoing poulation, and pretend it is 10 million more people. They are undecided.

Undecided: 10m
Remake: 1m
Sequel: 1m

Of that 10m undecided a good number are going to be under the age of 18, as most people who make up the bulk of ticket sales are youth. Let’s number them at 7 Million.

Undecided Adults: 3m
Undecided Youth: 7m
Remake: 1m
Sequel: 1m

Here is where we diverge.

New Gremlins Reference found in…Gremlins!

While viewing Gremlins with a good friend who had not seen the film in its entirety before….(And still hasn’t, so if you are reading this, we need to set a date for the second half! bwahahah) I noticed that during the scene in which Billy takes Pete to his room to meet Gizmo, there is a rolled-up Twilight Zone: The Movie poster in the corner!

For those that are unaware of Twilight Zone: The Movie, it release in 1983, and contained a remade segment of “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet”. This was the story of a man afraid to fly who was played by John Lithgow in the film, and William Shatner in the original 1963 Twilight Zone episode.

The man quickly becomes terrified of the Gremlin he sees on the wing of the plane, which he believes will cause the plane to crash.

The short tale is one of the most famous Twilight Zone episodes and movie segments, so the poster’s appearance is yet another subtle “Gremlins” reference within the movie, chalked right up there with malfunctioning machinery, and an AMC gremlin appearing in the film’s introduction.

Another neat little connection, is the legendary Dick Miller (Mr. Murray Futterman in Gremlins) makes an appearance in another segment in Twilight Zone: The Movie

For those interested in checking out the original 1963 episode, here is the episode on youtube

So there you go!

Soon there will be a report of how it was to introduce Gremlins to my friend….and how long she can tolerate watching for every little detail that fascinates me with the movie. That would make her pretty awesome to be able to enjoy the movie while I point out neat trivia all over the place.

Finally, as always be sure to vote on MovieMob for a good friend of Gremlins Online: Andre Meadows! He has brought Gizmo on to the show with him a few times and is never afraid to show how awesome of a Gremlins fan he is. Keep up the great work Andre, and we always want to see more Gangsta Gizmo!
